Profile
Mellissa Morgan (Ms.
Cupcake)
Mellissa Morgan (aka Ms. Cupcake) originally hails from
Canada and describes her baking as classic North American with a British
flavour twist. All of her unique recipes
contain absolutely no animal products so are all entirely vegan.
She began baking from home when she couldn’t find indulgent
bakery goods for vegans in London. She
soon realised that it wasn’t just vegans she could cater for, but also those
allergic to different foods like eggs and milk, and those didn’t eat certain
things due to religious reasons. She
soon developed lines of gluten free, soya free and even sugar free cakes.
Mellissa launched her business from her tiny home kitchen in
the spring of 2010 and began by selling her vegan cakes at markets around
London. Her rise has been meteoric, having opened London’s first entirely vegan
retail bakery in April 2011 and being named the Baking Industry Awards Rising
Star of 2011 in September.
The Ms. Cupcake bakery and shop is an open plan bakery where
everything is baked and decorated fresh onsite in front of the customers each
day. They feature cookies, brownies,
layer cakes, muffins, donuts and more but are renowned for their over 100
seasonal varieties of cupcakes.
Mellissa first appeared with her cakes as an amateur on
ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish in 2008 and has since made appearances on Islam TV
and was recently featured on Sky News.
Mellissa is passionate about encouraging other start-up
businesses and offers classes at her shop for those starting out and writes a
regular column for the British Baker magazine on running a small successful
food business. She is a passionate
speaker and writer and has motivated many people to open their own businesses
during these tricky financial times.
Mellissa is currently working on the first Ms. Cupcake
baking book.
