Biography
Arne Maynard is a successful garden
designer based in Clerkenwell in London
and in Monmouthshire. After studying architecture, he turned to garden design
and now his commissions' range from large-scale country gardens to small urban
spaces. His gardens have appeared in many publications, including Gardens
Illustrated and the Sunday Telegraph, and in 2000 he won, with Piet Oudolf, the
coveted Best Garden Award at the Chelsea Flower Show.
In 2001 Conran Octopus published Arne's
first book Gardens with Atmosphere and he is currently writing two more for
them entitled Garden Design Details Part 1 and Part 2.
He has given a series of sell-out lecture
tours both here in the UK
and in the US.
Arne has lectured at Lady Salisbury's Hatfield Festival of Gardening 2003, the English Gardening School,
The RHS Wisley, The Oxford Botanical Garden and a number of rural garden
societies and trusts. In the USA
he has lectured at The Royal Oak Foundation in New York,
Chicago and Los Angeles. Among the topics he talks on are
Gardens with Atmosphere and Theatre in the Garden.
He was commissioned by the National Trust
to design the garden at Dyrham Park, short-listed to design the 9/11 British Memorial
Garden in Manhattan
and he created a sustainable garden at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre in
Barnes, London.
Central to Arne Maynard's work as a garden
designer is his ability to identify and draw out the essence of a place,
something that gives his gardens a particular quality of harmony and belonging.
He has a holistic approach to design and believes that to succeed, a garden
must relate and respond to its surrounding landscape, its history and to the
buildings within and around its confines, as well as to the needs of its
owners. . Most importantly, Arne practices what he preaches and is a
passionate and experimental gardener at home in his own superb garden in Lincolnshire, that has
been described as amongst "the best domestic gardens created in the last
50 years."Arne Maynard is one of the most talented garden designers
working in Britain
today. Whether in the city or in the depths of the country, his gardens are a
magical combination of architecture and romance, the classic and the
contemporary, and relate to their surroundings in subtle ways." Tricia
Guild.
