Profile
JILL BILLINGTON started to work as a garden designer in 1986 and has
built up a thriving practice. She trained and worked initially as a
sculptor. She has won a number of awards including a Silver Gilt medal
at the Chelsea Flower Show. Her television work includes BBC2’s Gardens
by Design and Gardeners’ World. Her books include: Architectural
Foliage; Small Gardens with Style; Companion Planting; The Summer
Garden, Really Small Gardens, The New Classic Garden and Colour Your
Garden. Her last book was London Gardens published by Frances Lincoln.
She is sought after as a judge for major shows including Chelsea and is
a lecturer in garden design on the Degree course at Middlesex
University.
Biography
JILL Billington started to work as a garden designer in 1986 and has
built up a thriving practice, specialising in domestic gardens of all
sizes both in the UK and abroad. She trained and worked initially as a
sculptor. She has won a number of awards for her work, including
a Silver Gilt medal at Chelsea Flower Show, First Prize for part of a
National Trust for Scotland garden at the Glasgow Garden Festival, as
well as awards at Floreales D'Angers in France and the Garden Festival
at Les Jardins de Metis in Quebec. She is a judge for major shows
including Chelsea Flower Show for the RHS, and she has judged gardens
for all the RHS show gardens over the years. She has also judged the
annual Daily Mail gardening competition with David Stevens and for The
Times newspapers with Stephen Anderton. Jill lectures widely on
every aspect of garden design including planting, hard landscape,
sculpture in gardens and other detailing. Over recent years this has
included the Degree course at Middlesex University, the Inchbald
College of Garden Design, Capel Manor School of Garden Design,
Nottingham Trent University, University of Central England in
Birmingham, The English Garden School, West Green House, Goodnestone
Manor and Plumpton Horticultural College. She has given talks at many
institutions including the RHS Gardens at Wisley, the Royal Botanic
Garden in Edinburgh, the National Rose Society, Museum of Garden
History, Oxford Botanic Gardens and the NCCPG. Her lectures have taken
her as far afield as Victoria, British Columbia, Vancouver, Chile and
Buenos Airies. Her television work includes BBC2's Gardens by
Design, Gardeners' World and Granada Sky, and Terence Conran featured
her design work and gardens in a series Good Design for Japanese
Television. Her broadcast work for radio includes BBC World Service,
Talk Radio, Woman's Hour, London Radio and Growing Spaces for Scotland. Her
books include Architectural Foliage (Ward Lock 1992), Small Gardens
with Style (Ward Lock 1993), The Summer Garden (Ward Lock 1997),
Companion Planting (Ryland Peters & Small 1997) Really Small
Gardens (RHS and Quadrille 1998), New Classic Gardens revised as New
Formal Gardens (RHS and Quadrille 2000), Colour Your Garden (RHS and
Quadrille 2002) and her latest book is London's Parks and Gardens
(Frances Lincoln 2003). She has contributed to a number of magazines including The Garden, Gardeners' World Magazine and The Orient Express Magazine. |
