Biography
Judith was born in Liverpool
and early on realized that her twin passions were writing and design.
Whilst pursuing her nascent decorating ambitions in her bedroom in the 1970s
(think orange, brown and big flowers), she also started to write from an early
age. She went on to study English Literature at Leicester
University, then took a Masters Degree
in 20th Century English Literature at Warwick University
in 1983. She originally pursued a career in book publishing, before
joining IPC Magazines as an interiors journalist.
After a six-year stint on Homes & Gardens, where she was Decorating Editor,
in 1997 Judith went freelance to concentrate on a dual writing and styling
career. Judith has written for many UK publications including House
& Garden, Telegraph Magazine, The Independent, Homes & Gardens, Living
etc, Red, Junior, and BBC Homes & Antiques. She is a Contributing
Editor to House & Garden, and writes a monthly designer profile for
them. Judith’s journalism, which ranges from profiles to shopping pages,
house features to design articles, has also appeared in European and US
magazines.
Conran Octopus published Judith’s first
book, Transforming the Interior, in 1998. Since then, she has written and
numerous successful decorating titles. Children’s Spaces (2001) has sold over 103,000 copies and editions
are available in 11 countries. For Ryland, Peters and Small, she has also
written Essential Home (2002), Family Living (2003), Harmonious Home (2004), The Well-Organized Home (2005), Babies Rooms (2006), and Teen Zone (2007). Jacqui Small
has published Private Places (2005),
and Judith’s two latest titles, The
Natural Home and The Vintage Home
(both 2008). Judith was also the co-author with Sally Griffiths for The English House by Scriptum Editions
(2004).
Judith lectures on Styling for the KLC School of Design and has been a guest
speaker at a number of events, including the Daily Telegraph/House & Garden
Fair, the Autumn Gift Fair and the Autumn Ideal Home show. She has done a
variety of television and radio work, including an interior design strand for
This Morning with Richard and Judy - with a live makeover of a teenager’s
bedroom - as well as slots on the UK Living Channel.
Judith is married with two children and lives in
South West London.
