Biography
Dr.
NOEL KINGSBURY is internationally
recognised as an authority
and leading innovator
in the world of gardening
and planting design,
in particular for his
promotion of naturalistic
and contemporary planting
styles. Other interests
include the cultural
aspects of gardens and
food – he is the author
of a recently-published
ground-breaking book
on the history of food
crops.
Noel
travels widely to study
garden design and wildflowers,
believing that we have
a lot to learn from
other countries' experiences.
He introduced the English-speaking
garden world to the
now very influential
Dutch garden designer
Piet Oudolf, and popularised
ecological approaches
to using garden plants,
particularly the use
of perennials and grasses.
Believing that good
design needs to be backed
by science, Noel has
recently earned a doctorate
with the Landscape Department
at Sheffield University.
Noel
has appeared a number
of times on BBC's
Gardeners' World,
and has been featured
on Jane Asher's Good
Living, Granada Sky
Broadcasting and Radio
4's Growing Spaces.
He writes regularly
for The Garden,The Daily
Telegraph and Gardens
Illustrated.Country
Life, Homes & Gardens
and The Guardian.
In
2007, Noel and a colleague,
Tim Richardson, published
Vista, the Culture
and Politics of Gardens
(Frances Lincoln).
This has led to them
co-chairing a highly
successful monthly lecture
series at London’s Garden
Museum; Noel and Tim
have even been dubbed
‘the John Bird and John
Fortune of the garden
world’.
