Food historian Marc Meltonville features in a new documentary, 'The Bahlsen Story'.

This documentary charts the history of the Bahlsen biscuit, known to Germans as shortbread with 52 "teeth" for generations. 

The history of the cookie maker begins at the end of the 19th century with Hermann Bahlsen who is very successful with his thin "biscuits", which he bakes on the English model. 

Marc Meltonville explains how Bahlsen was inspired by English baking techniques, and favourites like the digestive biscuit, to create his famous thin biscuit, still popular today with 142,000 tonnes of product exported to 55 countries.
